A couple of weeks of ago I was running errands with my mother. Most of the places were the normally everyday mom places (groceries, bank, etc...). While in the care she informed that we would be going to a local Christian store so she could purchase a new Bible in the Amplified version. I laughed at her, even a bit condensing. I continued to have a "higher than thou" attitude as we moved through the store. I didn't think we needed anymore Bibles. I know, myself alone, has about three Bibles. All saying the same thing about the death of Jesus. As she proceeded to check out I joked, "How many Bibles does it take to get into heaven?" My mother wasn't amused. But honestly, how many Bibles does the average household have and does that make you any better as a Christian?
Huffington Post did a poll back in April of last year saying that, " the Bible is still firmly rooted in American soil: 88 percent of respondents said they own a Bible,..." According to that poll that averages out to about 4.4 Bibles. Even more surprising that only about 57% read their Bible about 4 times a year (I'm guessing holidays). About 26% actually read their Bibles on a daily basis.
So what does that tell me? It tells me that American's are too busy buying Bibles and not enough time reading them. What's the point of having all these Bibles and not reading it? Do people just buy them for showcase when they have religious acquaintances over? Do they keep buying them because they believe different versions will lead them higher up on the judgement list?
I'm curious on what you guys think. I've said my peace and now I want to hear from you. Leave comments below or if you are feeling offended and what to talk to me personally you can email me at v.sockwell@gmail.com.
