Growing up I was always taught that you needed to go to college. In my family, education comes first. You graduate from high school, get your associates, get your bachelors, and if you are an overachiever you get your master's. That's how it is and that's how it'll always be in my family.
But as I ponder the question more, the more I really think to myself, "why the hell am I in college?" I never saw myself as a good student. I was okay in high school and slowly my grades slipped as I got into college. I'm a hard worker (ask any of my past and present employers) but when it comes to school I fall short.
Why even bother going to college then, right? The thing is about me is that I love learning. I enjoy sitting in class and listening to passionate teachers talk about something they love. Going to college meant that I could learn whatever I wanted to. Nothing was in the way of me being knowledgeable on philosophy to video production. I could take whatever class I wanted and to me that made college worth it.
I may not be the smartest girl in the classroom or even the tenth smartest girl in the classroom. But what I think sets me apart from the other students is that I will always continue to learn. Even when I'm done with school and have a bunch of pugs hanging around my house, I will continue to read about the Greeks. I want to continue to learn more about politics and how our government is ran. I want to read more about how our culture has evolved.
My boyfriend tells me that my natural curiosity is something to be admired. I couldn't agree more. I hope that my generation continues to learn. I hope when they are asked, "why the hell are you in college" they say something along the lines of how they want to learn more so they can make the world a better place. I hope my generation will teach the next generation the importance of an education. That even when you fail, you try again. Never give up on a dream or an idea. Continue to learn and grow. Never stop growing.
